Phase 3: Longitudinal

This final phase of the project continued to address our second research question by using a longitudinal design to test the impact of the most effective utility-value intervention delivery methods identified in the experimental Phase 2 with a new randomly selected national sample of biology instructors. Optimized materials for presenting the utility-value intervention were compiled including a Utility-Value Intervention Resource Manual with detailed instruction for how to implement and grade the UVI in biology classes. We again introduced the utility-value and the optimized messaging through an animated video. In addition to self-reported intervention adoption intentions as measured in Phase 2, we measured behavioral indicators of implementation and implementation intentions before the fall 2020 term began, around the end of that fall term in January 2021, and again one term later after or near the conclusion of the spring term of 2021. In addition to these survey measures, we also requested that faculty share a recent syllabus from one of their introductory Biology courses. Our aim for this longitudinal experimental phase is to finish addressing our second research question: Does the optimized intervention presentation result in increased implementation of the utility value intervention in introductory biology courses?

If you are a researcher interested in using the syllabus documents (which have been scrubbed of all identifying information), please complete this data use agreement form. The Principal Investigator Dr. Dustin Thoman will reach out to you with approval and the digital copies.
